The Department of Environmental Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics, University of Trier, Germany seeks a highly qualified and motivated candidate for a
PhD position on Hyperspectral Forest Remote Sensing
PhD position (EG 13 TV-L, 50%) for three years
Starting date: 1st May 2013
The successful applicant will join the research project “EnMAP Core Science Team – Forests and Natural Ecosystems“, funded by the Federal Ministry of Economy and Technology. EnMAP is a German hyperspectral satellite that is planned to be launched in 2017 (www.enmap.org). The scientific preparation program includes the EnMAP Core Science Team which supports the communication with the wider science community of EnMAP and ensures scientific state of the art data exploitation. The research group on “Forests and Natural Ecosystems“ is located at the University of Trier.
Central topics will be retrieval of ecophysiologic forest variables from hyperspectral data and assimilation into forest growth models as well as the exploration of innovative algorithms and synergies with additional data sources. An airborne hyperspectral camera system (HySpex) and several instruments for field work are available to facilitate innovative research.
Research results are to be published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences. The candidate will take part in summer schools, project workshops and field campaigns. Co-operations with German and international partners are intended.
We seek a candidate with an above-average MSc (or equivalent degree) in Environmental Sciences, Geoinformatics, Geography or related fields. The candidate should have a strong interest in ecosystem-related research and an excellent background in remote sensing and geoinformatics techniques. We also expect excellent command of the English language, and good communication skills. Good knowledge of spatial statistics, experience with field work, programming languages etc. are additional assets.
