PhD scholarship in Biobased Coatings on Wood

Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in bio-based coating on wood commencing 1.9.2012 or as soon as possible thereafter. The application deadline is 10.8.2012.

Project description
The PhD scholarship is part of a cross-disciplinary research project on durable bio-based coatings for wood funded by the Danish Foundation for Advanced Technology.
The PhD project is an integral part of a multi-partner project at developing highly durable, protective coatings for wood that are derived from bio-based, renewable raw materials. This includes the use of bio-based oils and polymers as the binder in coatings. The objective of the PhD project is to understand the interactions between the coatings and wood. The composite includes the binder, pigments and other additives that enhance the properties to make them more durable with considerations on sustainability and life cycle analysis.

Knowledge of coating is important. Surface and adhesive interactions and polymer materials science is an important part of the project. You will be part of research team that includes us at the university, an organization that deals with R&D and technology transfer (Danish Technical Institute-DTI) and several industries. It is important to fit in our research group at the university that takes pride in the daily environment, and where creativity, innovation and interactions with colleagues and partners are an important ingredient. Working in a "wet lab" is an important part of the work, along with spending significant time at the laboratories of our partners, particularly DTI in the project. It is important that the candidate can work independently after initial training.
