The Department of Forest Products Technology at Aalto University, School of Chemical Technology, carries out scientific research and gives higher education in the sustainable use of renewable natural resources. The research foci are in bio-based materials, biorefineries and building with wood.
Prof. Janne Laine is heading the group of Forest Products Surface Chemistry. The objective of Prof. Laine´s group is to maintain a university education and a state-of-the-art research program in forest products chemistry that meets the needs of modern cellulose-based material science. In total, the staff working in the group (prof. (Janne Laine), FiDiPro professor (Orlando Rojas), four senior scientists, about 10 PhD-students, undergraduate students, technicians) consists of about 22 people.
The main focus areas of the research program are nanotechnological applications in the forest products sector, cellulose-based biointerfaces for bioactive materials, biomimetic materials and polyelectrolyte multilayers for forest products industry. For more information, please seehttp://puu.aalto.fi/en/research/research_groups/forest_products_surface_chemistry/
The group is well supplied with equipment for chemical analysis, surface analysis and characterization of interactions, adsorption, particle size, shape and charge. UV and NIR Raman spectrometers, XPS, AFM, QCM-D, AFM combined with Raman etc.
Topics for PhD studies are:
• Nanocellulose and its modification and utilisation in different applications
• Cellulose-based biointerfaces for bioactive materials
• Biomimetic materials
• Functional cellulosic fibers
