An ambitious and dedicated post-doctoral forest researcher to fulfil a key role in a recently started EU-FP7 project on “FORest management strategies to enhance the MITigation potential of European forests” (FORMIT), in which 12 European research groups collaborate to assess forest management strategies for CO2 mitigation, while maintaining other forest functions. The project is funded under the EU-KBBE programme, and aims for a high profile within forest research in Europe.
The main tasks will be to contribute to the work packages on carbon budgets and forest management strategies, to analyse trade-offs between forest functions under different management scenarios, to synthesize results across work packages, and to assist in the coordination and the management of the EU-FORMIT project (4 M€, 12 partners). In addition it is expected to work towards implementation of the results in the Netherlands and within Europe.
The successful applicant will be experienced in forest management systems in Europe, and knowledgeable on effects of climate change on forests. The position will include undertaking research, sustaining collaborative links with project partners and institutions, applying quantitative methods and scenario approaches, and integration and synthesis of results in adaptive forest management strategies relevant for forest practice. The successful applicant will be a strong team player, able to supervise the work of MSc and PhD students, and skilful in coordinating and synthesizing the work of the partners in the EU-FORMIT project.
Functie-eisen
For this project we look for a highly motivated, creative, communicative, and team-oriented researcher with:
1. A PhD degree in forestry or forest production ecology or a related field;
2. Research experience in the domain of forest resource management, forest ecology or silviculture, with knowledge about climate change impacts and the role of forests and forest management in the terrestrial carbon budget;
3. Experience in project management and research coordination in large collaborative research projects;
4. Excellent analytical skills and experience with research methods in forest research, preferably including forest modelling and scenario analysis;
5. Affinity with working in teams and in heterogeneous research networks;
6. Excellent communication and presentation skills in English (both oral and written), exemplified by a good academic publishing record.
Arbeidsvoorwaarden
We offer a full time employment contract (38 hours) for 24 months, with a possible extension with an additional 18 month in case of satisfying performance.
